Country Fried Vegan Steaks

Ingredients

Recipe

  • Vegetable or Canola oil
  • 2 Vegan Steaks – thawed
  • Makes 2 country fried steaks

Dry Batter

  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 – 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp poultry seasoning (optional)

Wet Batter

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened non-dairy milk
  • 1/2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp flour

Instructions

Pour oil into a deep pan and heat on stovetop to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (must be deep enough to cover steaks entirely).

Combine dry batter ingredients in one shallow bowl, and wet batter ingredients in another.

Once oil is up to temperature, dredge the Vegan Steaks in the dry batter. Press the dry batter into the steaks with your hands, and shake off the excess. Then transfer the steaks to the wet batter, coating well and shaking off the excess. Coat steaks in the dry batter one last time.

Using long handled tongs, carefully place the battered steaks in the hot oil, and fry until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Flip the steaks half way through for even cooking.

Remove the steaks from the oil and place on a wire rack to cool. Top with gravy, if desired.

Creamy Gravy

  • 1/4 cup non-dairy butter
  • 4 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups unsweetened non-dairy milk
  • Salt & pepper to taste

To make the gravy, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Once melted, slowly add flour while whisking continuously. Once all flour has been added, cook for about a minute, still whisking. Slowly add the non-dairy milk and whisk until smooth. Continue cooking until gravy reaches desired consistency. Add salt and pepper to taste.
